When Emerson Cantwell was born 17 weeks prematurely in April 2016, he weighed just 1 pound and 4.1 ounces. He spent the first 117 days of his life in the NICU at OU Children's Hospital, receiving 13 blood transfusions during that time.
Years later, Emerson's family remains grateful for those anonymous blood donors, the support of their family and friends — and the lifesaving efforts of his many doctors and nurses.
Emerson's mother, Magen Gage, wants them all to know they've helped Emerson become an "energetic, funny, kindhearted, loving and all-around amazing boy."
"Emerson has overcome many obstacles and though our rollercoaster of a NICU journey wasn't ideal, we are blessed beyond measure to have our sweet boy," she added. "Emerson is now 7 years old, with a birthday coming soon. He loves monster trucks, hot wheels, being with his family, Minecraft — of course — painting, baking and making something from nothing. We are so incredibly thankful for everyone who has been a part of our journey and who continues this journey with us."
